Punk Pioneers
Dylan Tan
One of the pioneers of the Singapore underground music scene during the eighties, Opposition Party lays claim to being Singapore's first-ever punk band. Some might dispute that but OP, as the group is known to its fans, definitely kept to the D-I-Y ethos of the genre and was putting out its own music way before the Internet made it common.
OP has gone through several line-up changes through the decades with founding frontman Francis Frightful the only original member left. The band celebrated its 30th anniversary last year with Complete Chaos Collection, a four-cassette-tape box set; and follows up with a belated and rare show this weekend at its old stomping ground, The Substation.
Expect it to be noisy and sweaty . . . just like the eighties.
