THE 15th edition of the Singtel-Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) Race Against Cancer drew more than 5,000 participants on Sunday (Sep 17) morning, and exceeded its initial donation target of S$1.25 million.

The annual event, which is among the longest-running charity runs in Singapore, was flagged off by Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng.

SCS and Singtel said the donation target for this year’s edition will be raised to S$1.5 million. If achieved, this would the highest sum raised through the Race Against Cancer since its inception in 2009.

Funds raised this year will go towards cancer treatment subsidies, welfare assistance, cancer rehabilitation, hospice care, cancer screenings, research, public education and initiatives by cancer support groups.

At the start of the day’s activities, Dr Tan, who is also Second Minister for Trade and Industry, unveiled a collage to mark the Race Against Cancer’s 15th year, and the corresponding partnership between Singtel and SCS.

Singtel also donated S$250,000 to SCS’ Help the Children and Youth programme (HCYP), which provides support to children and young persons whose lives have been affected by cancer in their families. The telco said it has been making annual contributions to HCYP since 2009.

“The 15th anniversary of the Race Against Cancer marks 15 years of rallying the community, to ensure that no one fights cancer alone,” SCS said.

This year’s Race Against Cancer featured three categories: a 5-km “fun run”, and two competitive categories, at 10 km and 15 km. There is also a virtual run that will take place from now till Sep 30.

SCS chief executive officer Albert Ching said: “The Race Against Cancer has served as an invaluable platform over the last 15 years to galvanise the community to come together to show solidarity and support for the cancer community.”

He added: “This collective fight against cancer requires collaborative efforts from different stakeholders, with each person playing a vital role.”

Among the participants on Sunday morning were more than 100 beneficiaries of SCS; these included cancer survivors, as well as their families and caregivers.

Meanwhile, as part of the CEOs Against Cancer initiative, the chief executives of 15 companies pledged to form teams and raise funds in support of SCS’ programmes and services.

Also taking part in this year’s Race Against Cancer were several interestingly dressed runners; some donned superhero costumes, while one suited up in medical scrubs.

Fundraising for the Race Against Cancer is open till Sep 30. More information on the run and how to donate can be found at https://raceagainstcancer.org.sg/
