Remembering a Renaissance man
A retrospective throws light on a forgotten writer, publisher and arts impresario, reports CHEAH UI-HOON
HE published the first biography on Lee Kuan Yew by Alex Josey, and Mahathir Mohamad's controversial book, The Malay Dilemma. Despite these two former prime ministers of Singapore and Malaysia in his publishing stable, thus having a hand in both countries' political histories, the late Donald Moore should also be known for his key contribution to Singapore arts and culture.
But few know his name. And fewer still realise that Mr Moore was a key player in developing Singapore's arts scene in post-war Singapore - with businesses that provided the foundation for the cultural landscape for both Singapore and Malaya, from 1947 until 1976.
An exhibition opening at The Arts House next month will throw the spotlight on this Renaissance man who has unfortunately been largely forgotten in Singapore and Malayan history.
