Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, died earlier this month at age 76. Her fans may quibble over which of her albums to remember her by. But our pick would be Lady Soul, her 14th studio album released in 1968. That album crossed genres and broke records, reaching No 1, 2 and 3 on the Black Album, Pop Album and Jazz Album charts respectively.
Lady Soul has 10 perfect or near-perfect songs that mesmerise even after countless listens. There's that catchy smash hit Chain of Fools which became a protest song for the Vietnam War, the powerful rendition of gospel-inspired People Get Ready and the underrated feel-good number Groovin. And, of course, there's the power ballad (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, one of the finest songs ever written and recorded in pop music history.
Lady Soul is available on iTunes.
