Resurrecting Halloween
Covid has strangely been a boon for Halloween 2021, as travel-deprived Singaporeans seek new thrills.
AFTER a disastrous 2020, spooks and scares are returning this Halloween with a vengeance. Most Singapore operators report brisk ticket sales and sold-out sessions. In some cases, operators have had to double or triple their Halloween offerings for the first time. The overwhelming demand comes from travel-deprived Singaporeans eager for fresh thrills, they say.
The phenomenon is not unique to Singapore. In the US, the National Retail Federation says American consumer spending on Halloween items is estimated to reach an all-time high of US$10.14 billion this year. In the UK, Halloween spending in 2021 is set to at least match its 2019 figure of £474 million (S$880 million).
At Singapore's largest annual Halloween attraction, Universal Studios Singapore's Halloween Horror Nights, Resorts World Sentosa has had to transform its popular haunted house concept into an exhibition to comply with safety measures.
