Seven wishes for golf in 2021
A local pro on the Singapore Open leaderboard would be welcome, and a breakthrough for Tiger Woods' 11-year-old son too
IT was a year best forgotten, for the Covid-19 pandemic not only wrecked global economies but the world of sports as well. Golf was high on the list of activities badly hit with many events postponed or cancelled altogether. The after-effects are still being felt as we see the dawning of a new year.
The 2021 SMBC Singapore Open was scheduled to take place in January, but it's not going to happen this month for sure. The grapevine says it could be held later this year depending on the sponsor and Covid-19 restrictions.
Still, 2021 promises to be a better year for golf. For a start, the US$1.5 million HSBC Women's World Championship is slated for its usual February-March slot at Sentosa's New Tanjong course. There are also assurances that some events, especially those organised by the Asian Tour, will return to the calendar. Singapore's dozen or so professionals are already heaving a sigh of relief after more than nine months of missing out on competition exposure.
