SGX Cares launches financial literacy training camp for Singapore footballers
The sessions to equip them with the fundamentals of financial management and investing
A GROUP of 12 footballers from BG Tampines Rovers sauntered into Singapore Exchange’s (SGX) training room on Friday (Jun 21). But instead of their usual practice session, the training they received was on personal finance.
The activity was part of SGX’s giving back programme. Its corporate social responsibility platform, SGX Cares, collaborated with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) to conduct a financial literacy training camp for footballers from the Singapore Premier League and Women’s Premier League.
This was the sixth session, and the programme will be ongoing till the end of the year. Other football clubs that have already participated include Balestier Khalsa Football Club (FC), Geylang International and Tanjong Pagar United.
Balestier Khalsa FC player Wayne Chew, who participated in one of the sessions, said: “As footballers, we have a very short career life as professionals, and it is important for us to manage our wealth so that it sustains us even after our retirement.”
SGX said that the session was curated to equip footballers with financial management and investing fundamentals to help them manage their personal finances during their football careers, and more importantly, beyond that.
Chan Kum Kong, head of research, retail and intermediaries at SGX, said: “Regardless of your chosen profession, we believe you also need to take charge of your financial health.

“We hope that by encouraging footballers to kick-start their investment journey early, they can better prepare for their retirement from the competitive circuit and safeguard their financial future.”
Apart from footballers from the first-team squads, the coaching staff and players from the under-21 teams also attended the training sessions.
In 2020, SGX Cares and Singapore Sport partnered to enhance the financial literacy of Team Singapore athletes, while in 2022, a series of workshops was conducted for Lion City Sailors FC.
As a key takeaway from the camp, Balestier Khalsa FC player Amer Hakeem Nazri said: “Assets can help improve wealth, and shares are a form of asset which can help to amplify our savings in the long run.”
