TWO major golf events last week raised over S$900,000 for charities.

More than 150 golfers and guests gathered at Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong course on Thursday (Sep 7) for the Singapore Exchange’s (SGX) charity golf tournament. About S$200,000 was garnered for non-profit organisations such as the Asian Women’s Welfare Association (Awwa) and Autism Association (Singapore).

The programme was the first of three events anchoring SGX Cares Bull Charge, the group’s flagship charity initiative. It also marked the return of the tournament after a three-year hiatus, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pol de Win, the initiative’s organising chairperson and SGX Group head of global sales and origination, said: “This year marks SGX Cares Bull Charge’s 20th anniversary, (and) it is a significant achievement to have raised almost S$48 million to support our communities since 2004.”

Also playing the game in the name of charity was SP Group, which brought in a record S$700,000 at its annual charity golf event on Friday.

A total of 140 golfers took to the greens at Tanah Merah Country Club, where more than 50 of SP Group’s business partners also made donations in cash and kind.

The amount raised went towards the company’s SP Heartware Fund, which supports programmes for 25,000 seniors from lower-income backgrounds, such as Connie Lim.

Lim, who is in her 90s, is a resident of Awwa Senior Community Home.

Chew Sutat, chairman of Community Chest, said: “The annual SP charity golf (event) exemplifies how corporates can rally their networks to do good. As social-service needs become more complex, such sustained partnerships ensure that we can continue to empower those in need to fulfil their potential, despite their life challenges.”

To date, more than S$20 million has been raised for the SP Heartware Fund, which was established in 2005.
