EVEN though 70 per cent of mothers and 93 per cent of fathers have jobs, Americans' attitudes about working parents - mothers as caregivers, fathers as breadwinners - have been remarkably slow to change.

New research, though, reveals a shift. Not only do as many as 92 per cent of Americans now favour mothers working in many situations, but as many as 77 per cent also support fathers not working when it is more ideal to stay home. The data uncovers a changing definition of fatherhood.
