THE Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) raised S$1.7 million at its May Day Charity benefit on Monday (May 1), with donations from more than 100 donors, including 44 corporates.
The May Day Charity is an annual fundraiser started by the SICC in 1972. Since its inception, the event has raised some S$25 million to support social service programme, the club said.
The charity drive will benefit 14 beneficiaries supporting various causes such as health, the community, disabled, children, and the elderly.
Monday’s event featured a golf tournament, where more than 500 golfers competed for cars and cash prizes at the club’s three courses. This was followed by a gala dinner, where performers Claire Teo and Azariah Tan from ART:DIS – one of this year’s 14 beneficiary organisations – sang and played the piano.
Hailing the SICC as a “club with a heart”, the charity’s patron President Halimah Yacob said: “I hope this spirit of giving will continue in the club for many years.”
Other activities in support of charitable causes have also been organised by the club’s various fraternities since April, and will continue throughout the month of May.
