SICC’s May Day Charity event raises S$1.4 million for 10 beneficiaries
THE Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) announced on Thursday (May 2) that it has raised S$1.4 million to date from its annual May Day Charity initiative, thanks to two golf events and a range of other activities over the last few weeks.
The funds will go to 10 beneficiaries, including the Dyslexia Association of Singapore, the Muscular Dystrophy Association (Singapore), HCA Hospice Limited and the Singapore Hospice Council.
The bulk of the amount raised came from a May Day golf tournament on Labour Day, which saw about 420 golfers playing at SICC’s Bukit and New courses.
Later that evening, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam – who’s also the patron of the SICC May Day Charity 2024 – attended a gala dinner where he presented tokens of appreciation to sponsors and partners.
In conjunction with the month-long charity drive, SICC on Apr 23 organised a golf day with a group of former English Premier League (EPL) footballers such as Teddy Sheringham and Dwight Yorke (both Manchester United), and Patrik Berger and Vladimir Smicer (both Liverpool).
Besides getting to rub shoulders with the legends, the participating golfers had the chance to bid for autographed football jerseys too.
SICC said that the May Day Charity, which started in 1972, has since raised more than S$25 million to support various social service programmes in Singapore.
Club captain How Seen Yong said in a media release: “This year, under the theme “Empowering Lives, Touching Hearts”, our journey takes on special significance in a world filled with uncertainty. It symbolises the unwavering positivity and resilience that both you and SICC can bring to our beneficiary organisations and their clients.”
