[SINGAPORE] More than 10,000 visitors came together at National Stadium on Saturday (Aug 16) and Sunday for Weekend With A Heart, a community event by Singapore Pools that raised more than S$1.2 million for charity.

The funds will go towards seven bodies – including APSN, Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore and New Hope Community Services – which run services in support of causes such as persons with disabilities, the displaced and marginalised communities.

Cheang Sai Ming, deputy director for communications and partnerships at APSN, said: “Funds directly support our vocational training and job-support programmes, and equip individuals with mild intellectual disabilities with the skills and confidence to secure employment and thrive.

“This funding is critical to maintaining our job retention rate of over 90 per cent and empowering our beneficiaries to lead meaningful, independent lives.”

The core event of Weekend With A Heart was Football With A Heart, an initiative that started in 2012. Since its inception, this futsal tournament has raised S$8.7 million for 57 charities and social enterprises.

On Saturday, 56 teams competed in the latest edition of the tournament, in which Singtel clinched the win. Charity round-robin matches were also played, drawing participation from parliamentarians such as Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow and Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh, and ex-football players such as Fandi Ahmad. There was also a mobile gaming competition and a movie screening.

On Sunday, Singapore Children’s Society held its annual flagship event, Walk For Our Children, at National Stadium. Families participated in relays and movement-based games to promote intergenerational bonding, and seniors took part in mass workouts.

Separately, Deloitte Singapore announced on Monday that it had raised S$700,000 for SPD, a charity that runs services for individuals with disabilities. The funds were raised through a 6,000 km relay run that was completed over 60 hours, with at least one Deloitte Singapore partner running at any given time.

The S$700,000 will go towards two of SPD’s early-intervention centres. Located in Kembangan and Jurong West, these centres make essential therapy and learning-support accessible to children with developmental needs.

The relay was flagged off at 6.30 am on Aug 14 at Gardens By The Bay, with Deloitte professionals, clients and corporate and community partners among the runners.

Since the event was also held to mark Singapore’s 60th year of independence, the route took the participants past local landmarks such as East Coast Park and The Esplanade.

Eugene Ho, chair of Deloitte Singapore and chief executive of Deloitte South-east Asia, said: “(The initiative) is a landmark effort showcasing our dedication to the communities we serve and our support for sport in Singapore.”
