Sipping the stories of Tamba
The intimate space pays tribute to both West African culture and a dearly missed brother
ON THE second floor of a shophouse in the vibrant nightlife hub of Duxton Road, cocktail bar Tamba seeks to capture the spirit of West Africa, beginning from its architectural details.
The narrow stairway leading upstairs has walls of rustic terracotta, carved to mimic the effect of wind on sand. The main space is marked by a thatched ceiling – evoking the thatched roofs of West Africa – and a wooden mural by French sculptor Etienne Moyat, with uneven geometric lines similar to those in traditional African art.
But the bar is not just a tribute to a region. The space features artefacts such as a used drum, chosen to express the personality of its namesake: founder Kurt Wagner’s late adopted brother, Tamba.
