So much more than just a campy romp

YOU can't go wrong with Ivan Heng in drag - and the veteran actor-director certainly doesn't disappoint in Wild Rice's revival of La Cage Aux Folles.
He's always a hoot on stage (with or without a feather boa and heels). And just as how he has made the titular role of Emily of Emerald Hill his own, Heng has found another career-defining one in this campy Broadway romp which has won 11 Tony awards.
The show has its roots in a 1973 stage play of the same name by Jean Poiret, and became a big screen Franco-Italian comedy five years later. It was then adapted into a Broadway musical in 1983 with a book by Harvey Fierstein and music/lyrics by Jerry Herman before Hollywood remade it as The Birdcage with comedians Nathan Lane and the late Robin Williams in 1996.
