Solange Shines

The strong critical reception to Solange's 2016 album A Seat At The Table helped her emerge from the shadow of her more famous sister Beyonce. When I Get Home, her fourth and new album, is even more experimental, and shows the singer diving more deeply into the wide range of musical influences in their hometown of Houston, Texas. The songs are dreamy, constructing their shapes and rhythms from Houston's many musical innovations, including blues, swing and country. But Solange isn't sampling sounds from her birthplace so much as reconstructing them from memory - a snatch of gospel here, a passage of jazz there - all blended into a mellow stream-of- consciousness style of pop. The overall effect is an almost ghostly evocation of places lived, people loved, and music sung and danced to.

When I Get Home by Solange is available on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon
