AS WE BADE FAREWELL TO 2017, and welcome 2018, a song that we are bound to hear and even belt out, at the stroke of midnight, is Auld Lang Syne.
The song is derived from a poem by Scottish poet Robert Burns, and set to the tune of a traditional folk song.
Ironically, Burns never intended his work to be the farewell tune that's sung around the world. In 1788, he sent the poem 'Auld Lang Syne' to the Scots Musical Museum, indicating that it was an ancient song but that he had been the first to record it on paper.
