Space Furniture undergoes a refresh

TWELVE years ago, luxury retailer Space Furniture moved from Millenia Walk to its current premises in Bencoolen Street, within Singapore’s arts precinct.

Two heritage villas connected by a new glass building became an interesting setting in which to discover a wide collection of designer furniture, kitchen systems, lighting and accessories spread across multiple split levels.

In celebration of Space’s 30th anniversary, Woha Architects has returned to give the 40,000 square foot flagship showroom a refresh.

“The original design ideas for differentiated spaces within a larger amalgamation of shophouses at Space were highly successful for a multi-brand furniture retail business,” says Woha’s director, Chan Ee Mun.

“We wanted to keep this successful paradigm and expressive interior spaces. But in an age of vivid imagery and fast-changing trends, we recognised the need to create new experiences. And what better place than the main greeting space any customer first walks into?”

Therefore, one of the centrepieces of the transformation is a display of 11 Flos Coordinates lighting fixtures that greet visitors upon entry. The arrival foyer is also embellished in dark tones and textured surfaces juxtaposed against sleek metal lines and an array of lighting to create an engaging and experiential space. A mirrored ceiling multiplies the spatial volume.
