S'pore works to dominate HK private art sale
They make up about 70% of SEA+, with the rest from Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia, reports RACHEL LOI
FOR the first time, Singapore has taken pole position in a private art sale in Hong Kong next month held by auction house Christie's. Some 70 per cent of the works to feature in SEA+: Chinese Artists in Southeast Asia, which kicks off on April 12 at the James Christie Gallery and runs until the end of the month, will be from Singapore.
The 60 artworks include oil paintings and Chinese ink and brush paintings that come mostly from private collections. Though painted by different artists, the works are linked by a common theme of migration out of China and assimilation into other countries in the region.
Local pioneer artists such as Cheong Soo Pieng, Georgette Chen and Liu Kang are featured, along with next-generation artists Tay Chee Toh and Chua Ek Kay.
