FROM staple food items, such as rice and dried mushrooms, to more extravagant ones such as baby abalone – these were some items in the festive bags put together for families in need by an army of 1,300 volunteers.
The volunteers, employees from Standard Chartered (StanChart) and also Singapore Airlines and new entrant Tower Capital Asia, spent two days packing the festive bags, also called fu dai.
On Jan 7, 8,500 bags were distributed around Singapore by the volunteers and some Members of Parliament, including Sun Xueling, Minister of State for Social and Family Development, and Teo Chee Hean, Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security.
The event, which is in its 10th year, is co-organised by Community Chest and Heartwarmers; Standard Chartered has been supporting this initiative since its inception.
Patrick Lee, StanChart cluster chief executive for Singapore and Asean markets, said: “Standard Chartered Bank contributes regularly to locally relevant and impactful causes through Community Chest. In line with our commitment to sustainable social and economic development, we will continue to step up our community efforts along with deepening our presence in Singapore.”
The event, Community Chest Fu Dai, is part of a larger initiative by Community Chest to nudge corporate and community partners into contributing more regularly and sustainably.
Chew Sutat, chairman of Community Chest, said: “As social-service needs become more complex, we will need to build upon our partnerships to explore ways to make giving a way of living – whether through donating, volunteering or providing resources.”
