Siput Sarawak, mother of actress-singer Anita Sarawak, appeared in more than 50 Malay films in her lifetime. Born Ramlah binte Dollah in Kuching, Sarawak, she was 12 when her father put her onstage as a chorus girl in an opera. She would soon win over talent scouts who put her on a film career path. She made her debut in Singapura Diwaktu Malam (Night Time in Singapore), based on a play by Bachtiar Effendi, in 1947. It led her to other movies like Chinta, where she met her husband (and father of Anita), S Roomai Noor. The couple made a movie together titled Berdosa, directed by B.S. Rajhans. Here, she's seen in costume on a promotional visit at The Straits Times office, no doubt brightening the day for jaded news hounds.
