DO we need another West Side Story? Do we need another Macbeth? Surprisingly, the answers are yes and yes.

The creators of these latest reboots are so clear in their visions, so precise in their executions, so simultaneously reverential towards and questioning of the source material, and so cognisant of our contemporary politics, that their films feel thrillingly alive and relevant for our time.

There have been over 100 screen versions of Shakespeare's Macbeth. And there has been one definitive screen version of West Side Story (1961) which won 10 Oscars including Best Picture, and is itself a loose adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet.
