The story's the thing
THE first duty of a storyteller is to tell a story. This is one of the most prominent lines in the 2003 play The Pillowman by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh. It also sums up the sentiment of Couch Theatre's artistic director Jasdeep Gill. To him, the line conveys the idea that the playwright had no hidden message or theme; the play is meant to be enjoyed for what it is.
"That's what the writer keeps trying to impress on everybody throughout the play - it's just a really good story, and it struck a chord with me," says Gill, 21. It's for this simple reason that he and his team will stage The Pillowman as their year-old theatre company's second production at the Drama Centre Black Box next week.
"As a director, I'm basically a storyteller. I'm doing the same thing as McDonagh - doing art for the sake of art, and telling the story just because it's a really enjoyable one," says Gill.
