Inspired by the Chinese supernatural classic Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio), award-winning creative duo Oliver Chong and Liu Xiaoyi with theatre company The Finger Players have created a set of strange stories that carries a veiled critique of contemporary society. There's the middle-aged widower who wants an attractive tutor to help his none-too-bright child and the mysterious foreigner who wants to rent a room to run a shady massage parlour. There's the fox spirit watching over these shenanigans and the dog with a foul mouth. What is reality? What is illusion? Performed in Mandarin with English surtitles, Citizen Dog is a social commentary on the lives of ordinary people, with a supernatural twist.
Citizen Dog plays at the Victoria Theatre from June 8 to 10. Tickets from Sistic.
