TO THE uninitiated, solid perfumes might seem like a novelty of the fragrance world, with offerings from mass-market brands such as Glossier’s You Solid making a splash in recent years. But these sweet-smelling balms have existed since the times of ancient greats, from Cleopatra to Caesar.

Solid perfumes are perfect for Singapore’s climate, having more staying power than their more-common liquid counterparts. Their wax-encased formulation means that scents stay on your skin for longer, since you don’t lose anything to alcohol evaporation – or from accidentally spraying the air when your mister’s pointed the wrong way. Solid perfumes are also great for touch-ups on the go; that means no more pungent, messy spills from losing your grip on an atomiser.

And for those who prefer a more classically macho aesthetic, solid perfumes also promise to do away with the delicate motions of spritzing liquid on your neck and decolletage. Being masculine doesn’t have to mean doing away with the little luxuries, smelling good included.
