STANLEY Gan was the star of the evening on Friday (Mar 24) as he clambered up the podium three times during the presentation ceremony at the end of the third leg of The Business Times Corporate Golf League presented by Singapore Pools.

At the Singapore Island Country Club’s (SICC) Island Ballroom, the 60-year-old – who plays for Team Centurion – drew loud cheers as he was named the champion in the individual category.

His name also came out of the hat to claim two prizes in the lucky draw.

Gan – a retiree who used to work in the water treatment business and now gets to play golf five times a week – claimed the individual honours with 39 points on the modified stableford system after shooting an eight-over 80 gross score.

The 11-handicapper won a S$500 Adidas voucher for his individual honours. At the lucky draw, he won a S$400 Adidas voucher and a Cobra three-iron.

“It was certainly my day,” he said.

“I was lucky with so many prizes and I excelled with four birdies on a course that I play often, being an SICC member.”

Also enjoying success last Friday were Team Boss as they set themselves up nicely for a first championship by extending their lead in the competitive team category.

At the SICC’s New course, the top three players of the Hugo Boss team chalked up 105 points to take their tally to 216 points, nine ahead of Team Centurion.

Team Boss topped the standings with 111 points in the first leg at Sentosa’s Serapong course.

The second leg at Tanah Merah Country Club’s Tampines course last month was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Team Boss first competed in 2018 and were runners-up in 2019, the last time the event was held before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Andre Huber (handicap 12.9) spearheaded Team Boss team to the hilt with 38 points after an 83 gross. Jonathan Lee (handicap 11.6, 34 points) and Shaun Tay (handicap 12.4, 33 points) put in strong showings too.

Team Centurion were a close second on 105 (adding one bonus point) after Gan’s brilliant effort.

He was supported by Quek Kwang Meng (handicap 18.9) with 33 points, and former Singapore No 1 professional Lam Chih Bing (handicap 0.8) with 32 points after an 82 gross.

Lam – once ranked among the world’s top 50 long-hitters and now holds an amateur status – unsurprisingly won the Longest Drive novelty event with 335 metres on the 480-metre Peirce second hole.

Said the 46-year-old Lam, who won a Cobra driver: “I was quite lucky that the ball had a downhill carry to almost 70 metres.”

Team I-Kare won the social category with 102 points, one ahead of Singapore Global Trust (sponsored by businessman Kelvin Chng), who were helped by former national sportsmen, swimmer David Lim (34 points, one birdie) and footballer David Lee (33 points).
