[SINGAPORE] The second round of The Business Times Corporate Golf League, held at the Singapore Island Country Club’s New Course last Friday (Mar 21), featured a slew of superlative performances.

Former national player Jaymie Ng, who is part of Team Boss, fired a sensational five-under 67 for a massive total of 41 points.

But with the organisers’ cap on 40 points, she amassed the same total as Orchid Country Club’s (OCC) Bryan Chen (8.9), who managed a very impressive 73 in the Competitive category.

The 20-year-old Ng, who ended up being the individual champion for the second leg, said: “This was my best-ever score at the New Course. I had shot a 68 before, but never 67. I was motivated to do well.”

She recorded six birdies and rued just one bogey. Her best birdie was on the par-four 280-metre Peirce first hole when she hit a brilliant drive. She managed an easy wedge to land 20 feet from the flag before sinking the ball.

With several golfers returning scores in the 70s, a total of 12 players registered 36 points or better on a perfect day for golf. The weather was clear after the rain from the recent monsoon took a welcome break.

Chen was not alone in contributing to OCC’s fortunes. His teammates Phillion Chiun, Cheng Keng Hui and Gavin De Luna chipped in for a dizzying 113 from three scores to claim the team honours.

OCC captain Joey Tan said: “We have registered 16 players for the competition, so we rotate them for every leg. We were determined to improve after the first leg and our golfers, all league players in the SGA (Singapore Golf Association) competition, raised their game.”

For all of Ng’s efforts, Team Boss could finish only joint third after the second round on 107 points, the other contributors being Chua Hun Yew and Gabriel Tan.

First-round leaders Singapore Global Trust maintained their perch in the overall table, their second-round tally of 112 points handing them 219 points, three ahead of OCC.

Kenneth Oh contributed 38 points while Winson Oh and Joey Chang – both with 37 points – boosted their tally.

The trio were among a host of golfers who shot in the 70s, the others being Gayatri’s Anthony Maniam, Singapore Pools’ Samir Bedi and Car Times’ former national player Vincent Khua.

With three rounds of this year’s tournament still to play, the action is heating up in the nine-team table, with just eight points separating the first and fourth-placed teams. Singapore Global Trust remain on the top.

One team that has brought out the true spirit of the league in competing for networking and client engagement is accounting firm CLA Global TS, which fielded a different set of players for each of the first two rounds.

Said CLA team captain Henry Tan: “We have been supporting the BT golf league for a few years now, and our philosophy has always been about interacting, socialising and having fun. We are not focused on team placings.”

In the social section, 23 golfers returned scores of between 36 and 38, with Singapore Pools’ Simon Leong beating four others on countback with 38 points to claim the individual title.

SGA won the leg’s team title in the social category with 113 points – three ahead of Mitsubishi Electric – thanks to the performances of Ivan Chua, David Ong and Chan Hee Mun.

Ng’s younger sister Denise, 18, who is also a former national player, won the longest drive competition with 250 m.

The third round of the BT Corporate Golf League will take place at Laguna National’s Classic course on Apr 10.
