THE 13-19 Art Prize is a new art contest for Singapore-based teens aged 13 to 19. It raises funds for The Business Times Budding Artists Fund through an auction of the winning works. You can bid for the works now by visiting www.trcl.sg/13-19-art-prize/auction.
One of the top prize winners is an oil-on-canvas painting by Chua Rui Yan titled Monotony. The work measures 84 cm by 59 cm, and depicts Chua's own mixed feelings about technology. It drew unanimous praise from the judges for its technical assuredness.
Chua, a 15-year-old student from Fairfield Secondary School, said: "The painting highlights how the use of technology directs the way we structure our lives...
"The glitch effect brings forth the notion of repetition. When we encounter a glitch in a device, we restart it in hopes of fixing the problem. Similarly, we restart everyday hoping for something new to happen."
One of the contest judges, renowned watercolourist Ong Kim Seng, was impressed by Chua's work, singling it out as one of the best entries in the contest. Ong said: "The work shows the maturity of an experienced painter."
