IN THE world of luxury timepieces, few names resonate as profoundly as Patek Philippe. Renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship and timeless designs, the Swiss watchmaker recently unveiled the Cubitus, a collection that promises to redefine its legacy.

This is the first new collection from Patek in a quarter-century, following the introduction of the women’s Twenty-4 in 1999. The Cubitus Collection is not merely an addition to the brand’s illustrious portfolio; it symbolises a launch into modernity, characterised by its unique geometric design and innovative features.

Targeted at the young, the Cubitus is a spiritual cousin of the iconic Nautilus, given its similar-sounding name, case construction and dial. The collection comprises three distinct models, each showcasing Patek Philippe’s commitment to excellence and introducing a fresh aesthetic. At first glance, the collection captivates with its rectangular case design – a bold move away from the norm.

The new squarish octagon form pays homage to the Nautilus, while embracing a contemporary flair that is both sporty and elegant. The collection features a harmonious blend of brushed and polished finishes, ensuring that each piece meets the brand’s high standards of quality.

At the pinnacle of this collection lies the Reference 5822P-001, which showcases Patek Philippe’s horological prowess through its intricate complications.

This platinum timepiece features an instantaneous grand date display at 12 o’clock, along with day and moon phase indicators – elements that highlight the brand’s commitment to technical innovation.

Powered by the renowned Calibre 240 PS CI J LU movement, this watch incorporates six patents related to energy management, underscoring Patek’s dedication to precision engineering.

The 5822P-001 is distinguished by its luxurious materials, including a baguette-cut diamond set into the bezel – a first for Patek Philippe.

The watch’s 9.6 mm thickness – to accommodate the movement’s complications – manages to maintain an elegant profile on the wrist; the modern composite strap adds a casual touch, ensuring comfort for daily wear without compromising on style.

A bold new shape and design

Patek Philippe has long been celebrated, not only as a master of complications but also as a pioneer in watch design, establishing a distinctive aesthetic that has produced some of the most iconic timepieces in horology.

Creativity lies at the heart of the brand’s ethos, enabling it to craft a diverse range of collections catering to various tastes and preferences. Each new model serves as an opportunity for Patek Philippe to showcase its unique vision of fine watchmaking, drawing inspiration from a multitude of sources while responding to the evolving desires of its clientele.

The brand has cultivated several legendary collections over the years, each with its own character.

The Calatrava, introduced in 1932, set the standard for round wristwatches; the Golden Ellipse of 1968 captured harmonious proportions inspired by the golden section. The Nautilus, launched in 1976, redefined sporting elegance, and the Gondolo collection from 1993 embodied the Art Deco spirit. The Aquanaut, which debuted in 1997, epitomised modern casual chic, and the Twenty-4 collection, which came out in 1999, timeless feminine elegance.

What unites these models is their enduring appeal; they are designed with clean lines that transcend fleeting fashion trends. As they evolve through subtle refinements, these watches retain their allure across generations, solidifying Patek Philippe’s reputation as a benchmark in luxury watch design.

The introduction of the Cubitus continues this tradition, promising to captivate both seasoned collectors and newcomers with its innovative design and craftsmanship.
