Thriving pottery scene takes centre stage
As Christmas approaches, demand revs up for unique ceramic pieces for gifts
BY ALL accounts, pottery-mania has hit Singapore. When the Singapore Clay Festival (SCF) debuted in 2021, 162 potters showcased 2,000 ceramic creations. But, for the 2023 edition running from Nov 2 to 5, these numbers have risen to 210 potters showcasing 3,000 works.
“We’re fully booked and had to turn away potters. We also received enquiries from potters outside of Singapore,” says Goh Eck Kheng, festival director of SCF.
This burgeoning interest is emblematic of a wider trend. Across the island, pottery studios are springing up, the biggest of them being the 6,000 square feet Korean pottery studio called Am I Addicted, which boasts several studios and a large locker space for storage and drying.
