GOING by recent events, the fortunes of football and athletics in Singapore are all but doomed. Both these core sports are on a downward spiral in popularity and support, and if the trend continues it won't be long before Singapore becomes lame ducks at international meets.
Sport Singapore (SportSG), the government body overseeing sports in Singapore, recognises this. Its chief executive officer, Lim Teck Yin, sounded the alert at a recent press conference to wrap up the nation's performance at last month's South East Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur.
Rightly, he was in a buoyant mood because, despite the dismal showing in football and athletics, Singapore recorded its best-ever away performance at the biennial Games.
