Tour in Black & White
Take a peek at Singapore's colonial homes in this special architectural tour
Tay Suan Chiang
BEFORE SWANKY CONDOMINIUMS and HDB blocks started sprouting up, some of the buildings that made Singapore's architectural landscape unique were the colourful shophouses and black and white homes.
The latter, which date back to the colonial period and were built between 1900 and the 1940s to house British army and administration officers, are an integral part of Singaporean culture.
Most of them are now rented out, but a local tour company has been giving visitors an exclusive look into these homes.
