THERE has been much hand-wringing by those in the architecture industry. Despite years of studying, graduates are choosing to leave the profession, with many pointing to the punishing work hours and low pay as key reasons.

The Singapore Institute of Architects is trying to address the issue, and even the government is forming a task force to look into how it can draw talent into the built environment sector.

In Friday’s issue of BT Lifestyle, we talk to some of those who left the profession. They reveal their love for the subject matter, tell us how they ended up in their alternative careers and share their vision of how things can improve.

In Design, we look at a house that’s a middle ground between brutalist architecture and refined, open spaces for showcasing artwork – topped off with traditional ventilation features.

In Dining, we head to China via Scotts Square, where the Sichuan-based Chamoon Hot Pot has opened its Singapore flagship restaurant. Find out what the experience is like in this upscale steamboat eatery.

Read all this and more in Friday’s issue of BT.
