Black Gold Hunting
The months of June to August mark winter truffle season in New South Wales, and lovers of this black gold can do more than enjoy them over scrambled eggs or pasta - they can dig for them on special hunting tours. Macenmist Black Truffles and Wines organises truffle hunts, where visitors follow their truffle dogs in search of Perigord black truffles grown in the Canberra/Snowy Mountain region. Once the dogs sniff out some truffles, visitors can help unearth them. They head back to the farm to clean, grade and weigh the haul. Then it's time to give the taste buds a treat with a leisurely three-course truffle luncheon in rural surrounds. Of course, there is also the chance to buy some truffles to bring home.
