A FESTIVAL to commemorate diplomatic relations and foster cultural exchange between Brunei and Singapore will be held this month.

The Idea of North festival aims to strengthen ties between Singapore and its regional neighbours through arts, business and lifestyle activities. The 2024 edition, which will take place from Sep 18 to 21 at 10 Square, Orchard Central, pays homage to four decades of diplomatic relations between the Republic and Brunei.

The festival is presented by non-profit arts and culture charity TRCL and produced by Global Culture Alliance (GCA).

A key objective of the event is to encourage collaborations and business partnerships, as well as educate Singaporeans about Bruneian experiences. The festival will include business networking events and roundtable discussions.

The festival also features a curated programme of events to connect people through the arts, such as visual arts exhibitions, panel discussions, film screenings and music workshops.

For instance, Tenunan: A View on Tapestry of Historical Processes is an exhibition that explores songket, a fabric that is hand-woven in silk or cotton and patterned with gold or silver threads. In the exhibition, songket is a metaphor to explore the intricacies of historical developments.

Joel Ong, head of business analytics and investments at Millet Holdings – the enterprise arm of TRCL – said: “The Idea of North not only celebrates the 40th anniversary of Brunei-Singapore bilateral relations, but shows the strong support garnered from Bruneian and Singaporean industry experts and government leaders alike.”

One roundtable discussion, Currents of Change: Navigating Brunei’s Contemporary Landscape, focuses on how Brunei has innovated and made economic progress while preserving its cultural roots.

The inaugural edition of the Idea of North festival was focused on Malaysia and took place over 12 days in August 2022.

TRCL manages the Business Times Budding Artists Fund, which sponsors arts training for underserved children and youths. Meanwhile, GCA is a non-profit organisation that aims to bridge borders through arts and culture programmes.
