UOB’s Scan Hub marks 10th anniversary, 9 years of championing inclusive workplaces

CHONG Yee Ruen is going about his day-to-day activites of scanning and digitalising documents for UOB – not unlike his colleagues. The 32-year-old has autism, but this did not deter UOB from hiring him. Not only has the bank appreciated his good work for eight years, it has also given him opportunities to learn new skills, Chong said.

More employers are beginning to realise that disability is not inability. UOB’s Scan Hub has proven to be one of the leading employers with that mindset. 

Scan Hub – UOB’s nerve centre for checking, digitisation and archiving of customer documents – was set up in 2012. In 2013, Scan Hub hired its first batch of six special needs employees. Today, it has a total staff strength of around 80, of which 30 are special needs employees. 

Last Friday (Dec 2), UOB celebrated the 10th anniversary of Scan Hub. The event was attended by more than 100 people comprising staff and external partners including Autism Resource Centre (ARC), SPD and SG Enable. The event was graced by UOB deputy chairman and chief executive Wee Ee Cheong, together with president of ARC Denise Phua, chief executive of SPD Abhimanyau Pal, and chief executive of SG Enable Ku Geok Boon.

Scan Hub’s vision, mission and daily practices are intentionally aligned to enable an inclusive and impactful workplace, and it should be a leading inclusive employer that many admire, said ARC’s Phua during the event. 

As part of recognising the staff at Scan Hub for their service, UOB honoured 34 Scan Hub staff with long service awards – above five years of service – and gave performance awards for nine staff at the event.
