Variety is the spice of exercise for Star Learners' Tan Meng Wei
Mediocrity scares him, so Tan Meng Wei pushes himself in fitness and in work
GROWING up, sports was a massive part of my life. I played almost every sport I could get my hands on except rugby, as I wore glasses then. At university, I represented my hall in six different sporting events.
I guess my genes have somehow rubbed off on my four children. My eldest, Matthian, used to play football and represent his school in sprinting. My youngest, Deborah, is into horse-riding. But it's my two middle children, Danelle and Merrick, who are the fitness monsters. Danelle plays football for the Singapore Women's National Team, while Merrick plays for the Lion City Sailors Elite Under-15s.
From my children, I've seen how participating in sports can help mould one's character and impact their physical, emotional and inter-personal development. They pick up skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, adaptability and leadership, which I strongly believe are vital traits our children need for the world ahead.
