WHEN the first Volvo XC90 was introduced more than 12 years ago, it sparked worldwide demand for its novel combination of rugged SUV looks and versatile MPV capability.
It was a handsome sport-utility vehicle which, like a multi-purpose vehicle, could seat seven adults comfortably, while offering the driver a commanding driving position.
The second-generation XC90 continues with the same formula, but with an even roomier cabin and a significant improvement in powertrain technology. Headroom and rear legroom have improved, and the thirsty engines are gone, replaced by fuel-efficient two-litre, four-cylinder units mated to eight-speed automatic transmissions to drive all four wheels.
