MANY gadgets pass through the review desk here at Gearhead, most of them interesting in their own way. But every now and then, a device will pop up which combines many features and attributes into a package which makes you put down your coffee cup, sit up a bit straighter, and give it more than just a once-over.

The Vivo X21 is one such device. Firstly, it's one of the new breed of so-called "bezel-less" phone, with a notch cut into the top of the screen, rather than a bezel that "frames" the screen. What does a notch have to do with a "bezel-less" screen? In doing so, you get more screen real estate, more space for your text and pictures, all wrapped up by a chassis which doesn't have to be made larger to accommodate that larger screen.

Chinese manufacturer Vivo claims to have cracked the 90 per cent screen-to-body ratio on the X21, and it's a believable claim. The 6.28-inch screen is large, bright and crisp, certainly enough to make movies and games enjoyable on it.
