Diamonds are a watch’s best friend

TAG Heuer continues its foray into the luxury watch segment with new innovations in laboratory-grown diamonds. Its latest efforts, coming only a year after launching a chronograph tourbillon watch decked with lab-grown diamonds, have produced two more models – this time with diamonds in creative shapes and colours, an industry first. 

The launch of these watches is timely as TAG Heuer celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Carrera this year, so it’s only fitting that its iconic flagship collection was chosen to showcase its commitment to innovation.

Like the first model, the new 44mm TAG Heuer Carrera Plasma Diamant d’Avant-Grade is also a chronograph tourbillon, but it’s not just a display of lab-grown diamonds. Thanks to TAG Heuer’s expertise in chemical vapour deposition (CVD) technology, the diamonds also come in various imaginative shapes – all set on the case, bezel and bracelet which are made of sleek black sand-blasted anodised aluminium.

The CVD technology also turned out a dial of unique design. Sparkling with 12 diamonds and three polycrystalline diamond plates, its brilliance is achieved by growing a vast number of diamond crystals as one, while creating breathtaking reflections and light effects in a single diamond body.

In fact, nearly every visible component of the watch is set with lab-grown diamonds. The total adds up to 15.5 carats. The new watch is a limited production. Price: 500,000 Swiss francs (S$740,000).

The coloured lab-grown diamonds appear in another new model, the TAG Heuer Carrera Plasma Diamant d’Avant-Garde 36mm. A bling version of the just-released TAG Heuer Carrera Date, the white gold plasma watch features 4.8 carats of lab-grown diamonds altogether, including 1.4 carats of coloured diamonds.

A single 1.3-carat pink lab-grown diamond sits on the crown of the 36mm white gold case, which frames a brilliant dial similar to that of the new plasma chronograph tourbillon. And just below the Carrera logo on the dial is also a special shield-shaped pink diamond. TAG Heuer says “further fully coloured models are to follow”. Price: 90,000 Swiss francs.
