Dress up in style with Tudor
The brand made its name with tough ‘tool’ watches, but its new two-tone timepieces show that it has a formal side too
Black Bay GMT S&G (Steel & Gold)
Sturdy and stylish for the looks-conscious traveller, this watch is fitted with a Tudor-developed self-winding movement that tells the time in three time zones. The mechanism is housed in a 41 mm wide stainless steel case with a trendy brown and black bezel. It’s a nice match for the new two-tone steel and yellow gold bracelet, which takes after the folding riveted bracelets that Tudor made in the 1950s and 1960s – famous for the rivet heads on the side of the bracelet that held the links together.
Along with this design detail, the new bracelet also has solid links which copy the distinct stepped construction of the earlier bracelets. But, of course, being of more recent vintage, the new bracelets are made and integrated by modern manufacturing technology.
The S&G bracelet may be swapped with a brown leather strap, which features light top-stitching and a gold clasp; or with a fabric band whose “manufacturing quality and comfort on the wrist is unique”. Tudor should know something about fabric straps; it’s among the first watchmakers to offer it with its timepieces, and they are woven by a traditional method in France by Julien Faure, a clothes and fabric company.
Besides adding colour to the watch, the colours on the bezel are also necessary for the display of the three time zones. On the aluminium disc of the bezel, the graduations for the 12 daylight hours are gold-coloured on the brown section, while the nighttime hours are on the black section. The 24-hour graduated two-way rotating bezel and the “24-hour” hand mean a third time zone can be tracked.
This “24-hour” hand is Tudor’s famed angular “Snowflake” hand – the brand’s aesthetic signature – which indicates the reference time on the dial. This hand completes a lap every 24 hours. The local time is provided by a shorter “Snowflake” hand set by a jumping hour, which can be moved forward or backward.
The automatic movement powering the Black Bay GMT S&G also has a non-magnetic silicon balance spring that enhances its performance. Indeed, the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) has certified it to be a robust, endurable, reliable and precise chronometer.
In fact, the watch has an average time variation of between -2 and +4 seconds – better than the -4 and +6 seconds rates which COSC prescribes.
A power reserve of 70 hours makes this timepiece weekend-proof – you can take it off on a Friday evening and put it back again on Monday morning without having to reset it.
Price: S$7,710 (steel & gold bracelet), S$5,970 (leather or fabric strap)

These trendy two-tone dress timepieces exude “sophisticated, versatile, unisex chic” sharpened by cutting edge technical watchmaking refinement. Their inner beauty is given a lift by new COSC-certified in-house movements.
The watches also offer maximum comfort for the wrist, because the five-link steel and gold bracelet fitted on them features the Tudor “T-fit” clasp, with rapid adjustment, and it comes in all sizes.
The new timepieces showcase a new polished yellow gold bezel and curved crown, which give extra embellishments to a shining case with domed sides. Added sparkle on the wrist is also available in a diamond-set bezel, but this option is only for sizes 31, 36 and 39 mm models.
