ABOVE all, Vasco da Gama succeeded in discovering a new sea route from Europe to India in 1498 because he was obsessed with precision - precision in reading the stars and manipulating the very rudimentary navigational aids at his disposal. This has inspired Montblanc to launch in 2015 the Heritage Chronometrie collection, powered by new in-house movements which are models of "precision and perfection".
"Chronometrie" is French for "precise timekeeping". Apart from precision, the Heritage Chronometrie collection also bears the traditional features of fine Swiss watchmaking: from the refined, slim cases with straight bezel and curved horns to the artistically finished sun ray dials with double-faceted sword hands as well as figures and indexes derived from the legendary Minerva Pythagore watch.
The spirit of the latter is seen in the Heritage Chronometrie Ultra Slim, a piece in the collection that has a hand-wound movement housed in a 38mm red gold or stainless steel case just 5.8mm thick. The watch retails at S$8,700 in gold and S$3,085 in steel.
