WATCH lovers had a chance to refresh their shopping list this past week at Geneva Watch Days 2022, where some 20 brands gathered to show off their new creations. Now in its third year, the 4-day fair featured some that stood out from the rest.

The silicon hairspring, which is fast replacing the traditional hairspring in a mechanical watch movement, has vastly improved the performance of the modern watch. And the watch world has Ulysse Nardin to thank for it. The independent watch brand was the first to introduce silicium escapement components in 2001. Though there are differences between the two, both silicium and silicon offer a fix to the issues that have long plagued the traditional hairspring.

In a nod to one of its greatest watchmaking innovations, Ulysse Nardin has adorned the bezels and indexes of the Blast Tourbillon Rainbow and Lady Diver Rainbow with the iridescent rainbow colours of silicium — sparkling purple, green, blue or pink gemstones. And, of course, the 2 new models are fitted with movements that incorporate silicium components.
