Sonic boom
Having minute repeating wristwatches in a brand's portfolio is a showcase of its technical strength, which is why these brands want their minute engineering marvels not just to be seen but heard, literally.
TOURBILLONS these days are standard offerings from the big watchmaking brands. This is a giant leap forward for the watchmaking industry as it was perhaps a decade or so ago that only a handful had the expertise and resources to make tourbillons.
Perhaps that explains why the next major challenge, especially for the top brands, is the mastery of minute repeaters, traditionally defined as watches that can tell the time on demand by means of activating striking mechanisms that sound the hours, quarters and minutes. A traditional striking mechanism will generally have two hammers for "striking" the gong, producing a low tone ("ting") for the hours, a double-tone ("tingtang") for the quarters and high tones ("ting") for the minutes.
Activation of the striking mechanism is typically by way of a slide or a push-piece.
