THIS year saw more than the usual share of watches with round cases launched, which perhaps makes Cartier stand out even more for bending the rules with shape in its new collection.

The King of Jewellery, which is building up its presence in the watchmaking world, is leaving a bigger footprint with a new timepiece that boasts not only a new crown, but also a new shape - a timepiece sporting a gently round bezel held by smoothly tapered horns that reminds you of the cushion-shaped creations popular in the 1970s.

The Cle De Cartier got its name from the watch crown, which resembles a key. "Cle" is in fact French for "key" and is reminiscent of the key that turns traditional pocket watches.
