Perpetual evolution of an icon
Discover the unparalleled journey of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master at a special exhibition
THE world of luxury timepieces often demands a constant push towards innovation while maintaining absolute fidelity to heritage. This precise philosophy defines the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master, the subject of Time Zone to Time Zone, an exclusive exhibition presented by Rolex and Cortina Watch.
Launched in 1955, the GMT-Master was developed as the ultimate tool watch for globetrotters. Its conception answered a fundamental problem presented by the changing perception of distance accompanying the rise of intercontinental commercial aviation.
Designed to navigate the globe and bridge time zones effortlessly, the watch instantly became recognisable by its distinctive two-colour bezel. Its name echoes the idea of travel as much as its core function: the reliable display of a second time zone in 24-hour format.
The timepiece established itself as a benchmark for travellers – from commercial aviation to space exploration – and served as the tool of choice for actors, explorers, artists and adventurers alike.
This journey of perpetual evolution is chronicled at the Time Zone to Time Zone exhibition. Visitors trace key technical milestones, notably the 1982 introduction of the Calibre 3085, which featured the breakthrough of the independently adjustable hour hand. This significant advancement coincided with the renaming of the timepiece to the GMT-Master II.
Since its inception, the watch has gained consistently from Rolex’s innovations, including changes to the bezel material – from Plexiglas to ceramic since 2005 – and the return of the Jubilee bracelet in 2018.
Visitors will get to see the evolution of the watch through displays as well as uncover the stories of contemporary personalities and aviation pioneers who shaped history with this legend on their wrist.
Time Zone to Time Zone takes place from Oct 24 to Nov 2 at the Paragon Level 1 Main Atrium
