Tudor goes gold
The brand’s popular watches get a touch of the precious metal for Chinese New Year
CHINESE NEW YEAR SIGNIFIES A time of abundance, health and of course, good fortune. And what better way to symbolise the latter than with gold, the ultimate symbol of prosperity. In time for the year of the rabbit, Tudor presents some of its popular watches embellished with the precious metal. Wear it for luck, but most of all for its refined aesthetics and technical performance.
Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18K
This popular divers’ watch will win even more fans now that it also comes, as its name suggests, in 18 ct yellow gold. The case is obviously gold, but from afar, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18K stands out for its ‘golden green’ dial and bezel, made all the more striking with matt gold details. The ‘golden green’ colour palette is extended to the fabric strap paired with the watch.
Tudor’s divers’ watches have never appeared in 18 ct gold, not even a tinge. In the Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18K, the precious metal is almost everywhere, including the ‘snowflake’ hands and appliques of the hour markers. The watch’s open case back with sapphire crystal, which reveals a self-winding mechanical movement with a bi-directional rotor system, is also a first for this watch.
Make no mistake, this is no garden variety gold watch. Instead of a typically bright finish, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18K is entirely satin-finished for a matt effect that vintage enthusiasts will appreciate. The look is apt for a watch that originated in 1958, when Tudor launched its first divers’ watch, waterproof to 200 metres deep.
Vintage watch lovers will also be drawn to the 39mm case size, which is in keeping with the characteristic proportions of the 1950s.
