CRITICS' CHOICE
Hollywood has Bombshell and closer to home, there's Nina Wu, the critically-acclaimed #metoo drama by Myanmar-born, Taiwan-based filmmaker Midi Z (The Road to Mandalay). First screened at last year's Cannes' Un Certain Regard section and Singapore International Film Festival, it now gets a general theatrical release and is a mustsee. Written by and starring Z's regular collaborator, Wu Ke-xi, who plays the titular character, it's loosely based on the actress's personal experience in the film industry and the dark side of the business. The plot centres on bit-part actress, Nina Wu, who finally gets her big break in a role that calls for explicit sex scenes. Between debating whether to take on the role and being coerced by her sleazy agent to grab the opportunity, Wu's life spirals out of control. ~ Dylan Tan
Nina Wu opens on Feb 20.
