WHEN I was in university, I worked as a waitress in the US during my summer vacation through a work-and-travel programme. One thing I learnt quickly is that Americans always start a conversation by asking: How are you?
That's all good and well, until I realised soon enough that no one cared to know the answer. It was standard protocol - people just want to hear that you're fine, thank you. Moving on.
But the thing is, many people today are not okay. They turn up in the office, they may look fine, they could do great work, and even find time to crack a joke or two. But they are not okay. And we should care.
