Women of the world take centre stage
One choreographer works with scientists for mind-body investigations, while another interviewed over 100 women worldwide for her piece. Headlining choreographers Wayne McGregor and Maria Pages at this year's da:ns Festival aren't just artists but also active in fields outside of dance. By CHEAH UI-HOON
Maria Pages' flamenco creation spotlights women of the world
A 90-year-old Russian actress, a Japanese woman who lived through World War II, aboriginal women in Australia and abused women in a Madrid shelter were among the women whom flamenco dancer and choreographer Maria Pages talked to for her latest production I, Carmen.
The full-length production premiered in Madrid this month, and will have its international premiere in Singapore next month, but it's a piece that Pages had been working on for several years. "Everywhere I travelled, I talked to women, and interviewed them," she relates. "I did a lot for the pre-production and this was a project that was close to my heart."
