Balancing data security and digital progress crucial in enhancing Singapore’s aviation hub status
PASSPORTS have long been iconic symbols of international travel. However, from 2024, travellers departing from Singapore will be able to go through all checkpoints at Changi Airport passport-free, with end-to-end biometric clearance technology.
This will be enabled by a single token of authentication that first is built on the backend, based on the passenger’s identity data and flight information. These details resurface when the passenger shares their biometric data at various airport touchpoints, allowing the airport operator and immigration authority to establish who they are and which flight they will be taking. The passenger can then enjoy a seamless and contactless journey through the airport, without the need for multiple passport checks.
The introduction of end-to-end biometric clearance will reshape the travel experience for Singapore, as it works towards strengthening its status as a top aviation hub globally. At the same time, there needs to be a delicate balance between enhancing airport operations and ensuring the highest levels of data security and privacy, especially when highly sensitive information such as biometric data is involved.
